Orlove called the Citroen C1 " !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ". While no oil painting, it ain't the ugliest. It's technically identical twin, the Toyota Aygo, is:

It's funny, I still rather like the original C1, Aygo and 107 triplets (well, not so much the 107's gaping mouth), but this generation is a styling car crash. Good news for Renault's Twingo and the VW group's Up!/Citigo/Mii, though.

I think the 108 looks... Okay. (Though still nowhere near as good as the old 106.)

The GTi (no, it isn't real, and that makes me sad) treatment certainly helps.

The nose looks like the car's trying to be a superhero...or supervillain.

Lose the mask, any you may actually have a relatively decent looking car.

"...okay" is a good description, but if a notch above "not ugly" is the best that the PSA/Toyota triplets can do, it's not looking well for them.

I see the Lexus styling has filtered down...

It's not a bad looking thing to my eyes. I'm a fan of the first generation and used to own one. An endearing little bastard, let down by an almost complete lack of motive force.

In my perception the 108 is the conservative one, the C1 the hipster pick and the Aygo is, well, a Toyota. I think I like the Citroën most, but I'll reserve my judgment until I see them in real life.

At least there's a clear distinction in concept between the brands. The first gen of the triplets, independent of facelift, may have had different styling but the concept was similar. With the old ones when you wanted a new one and you weren't a brand fanboy you picked the one with the dealer that was nearest to you and/or had the best dealer experience. With this new generation this has changed.

As they say: it's more fun driving a slow car fast than a fast car slow!

I've not actually driven one, but I thought that winding up that Daihatsu-sourced triple is diverting, even if no tarmac will be torn or speed cameras triggered.

Theoretically you would be entirely correct. However the complete lack of meaningful communication 'twixt throttle pedal and throttle body meant that any pressure on the pedal took about seven hours to reach the engine. Said engine was also equipped with a flywheel made of lead and a crankshaft set in cement so it was about as willing to rev as a Wartsila ship engine. Couple this with the OE fitment of Continental 'fuel saver' tyres (main compound component: charcoal) and you are left with something only slightly more entertaining that that horrible Italian movie which won an Oscar yesterday. However it used little to no fuel, could be parked in a single bedroom and never broke, which coming from an Alfa Romeo was a big thing for me.
